Chapter 7

“Why are you here?” Lani leaned back on the couch with her feet hanging over its arm rest.

“What do you mean?” Erin sat on the floor in her living room with her latest purchase, a houseplant, in front of her. She had the potting materials on discarded newspapers.

“You got your coochie cobwebs dusted and now you’re acting as if that’s no big deal.” Lani flexed and relaxed her feet.

“Marc has a race to concentrate on. I have my work. And at the moment, as you can see, I’m putting this plant into that pot and then placing it near the sliding doors to the balcony.” Erin pulled the bag of soil closer to open it.

“I get that. But did you talk about stuff afterward?” Lani held up her hand with fingers splayed. “It’s been five days. What kind of relationship is that?”

“The kind that doesn’t need you sniffing all over it.” Erin ripped open the bag, spilling the soil on the carpet. She swore, frustrated by her sister’s questions, which had not stopped since she crossed her doorway that morning. She tried to stay busy.

“I’ll get the vacuum.”

Erin waved away her offer. “Don’t bother. Just stay on the couch and not talk.”

“Okay.”

Erin brought out the minivacuum and sucked up the dirt, noting that she’d probably have to use carpet cleaner.

“But I don’t understand why you’re here. It’s his big day.”

“I’m not a fan girl. I’m his doctor.”

“It’s not an either-or. There is a space in between those two people to be a normal, levelheaded girlfriend who supports her boyfriend by cheering him on from the sidelines.”

“First, I don’t know that he wants everyone to know he has a girlfriend. I’m sure the team doesn’t need to know that we are an item when I’m supposed to sign off on his health. And I don’t like race car driving. When have you ever seen me look at the sport on TV?”

“When you’re dating someone, you do things that you normally don’t do because it’s not just about you. I think you’re so used to being by yourself that you’d prefer to sit in your living room and stick your head in that dirt.”

“Thank you—from the expert of using and dissing men.” Erin golf clapped.

Her sister’s observations stung. She just couldn’t understand that being responsible sometimes came with a sacrifice. Avoiding Marc was for his own good. He’d gotten what he wanted—which was for her to sign off for him to race. She’d gotten played by the best of them, despite her intention to keep him at arm’s length. And she’d gotten overconfident that a few stolen kisses were harmless. Her body’s betrayal didn’t help. She’d caved under his touch. Well, more like under his tongue. The memory brought a warm flush to her skin. She picked up the miniature pitchfork to loosen the soil in the pot.

Lani got up and went into the kitchen. She pulled out bread and deli meat. “Want a sandwich?”

“Sure.”

Their arguments never got further than tense words and lots of attitude.
